DC Comics and DC Universe truly outdid themselves this afternoon at the virtual Comic-Con@Home as DC’s summer event, titled DC Fandome, premiered a slew of new goodies including the latest “Wonder Woman 1984” trailer. I thought the first “Wonder Woman” was, mostly, fine. Gadot and Chris Pine’s scenes were solid, but, given the fact that this was a DCEU movie, there wasn’t much risk involved in the storytelling. Robin Wright‘s Antiope was unfathomable, ditto Connie Nielsen‘s Hippolyta. Danny Huston‘s Erich Ludendorff and David Thewlis’ were underwhelming as well. However, this trailer’s eye-popping colors have somewhat sold me to the idea of a second movie — ditto its meta-humor and ‘80s setting. Also, blink and you’ll miss Pedro Pascal‘s “Maxwell Lord,” a character rumored to be based on a 30something Donald Trump. Yesterday, an interview ran with WW84 costume designer Lindy Hemming [via The Independent and HE], where Hemming acknowledged that Lord was partly inspired by Trump: Excerpt #1: “That’s helpful to look at Donald Trump, isn’t it?” Hemming teased. “There is something about the period of Donald Trump and being a businessman, isn’t there, of being rather sleazy a little bit, and a bit goofy [in the] hair and a lot of talk. So that’s why he’s there. Yeah, so that’s it, really.” Excerpt #2: Director Patty Jenkins has suggested that Trump served as just one of a number of inspirations for the character. ‘He’s one of them,’ Jenkins told Screen Rant. ‘I mean honestly, the funny thing is he is [an influence], but I’m not trying to make…I don’t want to get political, it’s not about being political.’” “Wonder Woman” is set for aN October 2nd, 2020 release date — I’m assuming given this is being distributed by Warner Bros. and they are also in charge of next week’s controversial pandemic release of Christopher Nolan’s “Tenet,” we can probably expect WW84 and the WB to stick with its release date … that is unless people don’t show up for “Tenet” when it opens wide all over the world.
