The release calendar was shaken to its core today when Disney  announced a slew of changes to its own calendar, including the total removal of Niki Caro’s “Mulan” and Wes Anderson’s “The French Dispatch.” Also, Ridley Scott’s Ben Affleck and Matt Damon-starring “The Last Duel,” which had its production halted this past March due to the pandemic, has been moved from a December release to an October 2021 date. Yikes. I was also told, via a solid source, that Disney is in the closing stages of totally scrapping the theatrical release for Pixar’s SOUL and sending it straight to Disney+ this coming November. The film would still be eligible to contend for Oscars, as per new AMPAS rules. Right now, not counting Netflix’s fall lineup, the Oscar contenders left on the 2020 slate are: Steven Spielberg’s “West Side Story”Paul Greengrass’ “News of the World”Adrian Lyne’s “Deep Water”Chloe Zhao’s “Nomadland”Sofia Coppola’s “On the Rocks”Tom McCarthy’s “Stillwater”Denis Villeneuve’s” Dune” Pathetic.
