It looks awful. They picked the most awkward facial expressions to use… I was already very skeptical about Gerwig deciding to follow up her triumphant “Lady Bird” with an adaptation of Mary Alcott’s overly-familiar novel “Little Women,” alas, my skepticism seems to have been correct as “Little Women” was screened for a few select critics last week — the reaction was mixed, with Florence Pugh and Saoirse Ronan being singled out as the stand-outs. The lack of unanimous acclaim from those tweets does strike me as a major red flag for the film, even if it does have a few champions here and there, so much so that a few important pundits have already taken the movie out of their Oscar predictions list over at Gold Derby. Oscar may not come calling for the movie, at least as far as I’m concerned, but there is little evidence as to exactly how it will be greeted by critics and audiences when it is released on December 25th.
