Now, according to IMDb, the budget is said to be $168 Million. The cost of “Mad Max: Fury Road” was around the same, with estimations ranging between $154-185 million. Taking on Charlize Theron’s role of Furiosa will be Anya Taylor-Joy. Joining her in the cast are Chris Hemsworth and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II in unspecified roles. Details about the plot are still unknown, but this ‘Furiosa’ prequel will focus on the early days of the character, and how she grew to be the war captain under Immortan Joe....

Don’t say I didn’t warn you. I’ve been saying “CODA” will win Best Picture ever since it won the SAG ensemble a little less than four weeks ago. In fact, I’m inclined to believe that “King Richard” stands a better chance at winning BP than “The Power of the Dog.” The preferential ballot is what this is all about. A film as divisive as “The Power of the Dog” stands little chance of winning with this kind of voting system in place....

IndieWire’s Eric Kohn has seen the film and had these eloquent, but briefs thoughts about it: “This is another bold creative swing from the veteran filmmaker, a tense and absorbing acting showcase with visual splendor to spare. It’s a powerful meditation on the value of solitude in clarifying one’s thoughts, which makes it all the more relevant in today’s post-pandemic landscape, and another reminder that Wiseman hasn’t lost any of his filmmaking magic in his ninth decade....

The vultures within the Iranian government have arrested filmmaker Jafar Panahi. For what? Protesting fellow filmmaker Mohammad Rasoulof‘s arrest. If you remember, Rasoulof won the Golden Bear for “There is No Evil” just a year ago. It was a political statement about the Iranian government’s incarceration system. Now Panahi, who was previously jailed, is back in the slammer. Panahi and Rasoulof were arrested together in 2011 for filming without a permit....

“You’re seeing what’s available out there and it’s just diminishing and diminishing in terms of, it’s big Marvel movies. However, Judd Apatow’s much-anticipated “The King of Staten Island,” Universal’s Pete Davidson-starring comedy, will be hitting VOD in June, making it the latest film to cancel a traditional theatrical release for direct home viewing instead (after “Trolls World Tour” and “Artemis Fowl”). “The King of Staten Island” will be available to purchase on June 12th, a week before it was scheduled to debut in theaters. Davidson and Apatow had previously announced the news in a video posted via Twitter....

Demange’s film White Boy Rick is anchored by yet another high-level performance from the 48-year-old McConaughey who has now built up a solid body of work ever since the famous McConaissance started in 2011 with “The Lincoln Lawyer.” His work here, as a man torn between family and the law, is another note-worthy addition to an impressive filmography that only grows in stature with every movie. We spoke to McConaughey, at the Toronto International Film Festival, about his latest role, what inspires him and why he doesn’t want to make his characters likable....

Adam Driver, Penélope Cruz and Shailene Woodley have hopped onboard Mann’s long-gestating passion project. The film will be set in the summer of 1957, during a time of immense distress for Ferrari. The company he built was going broke, at the same time, his marriage was crumbling after the death of their son. Deadline had originally described “Ferrari” as having an almost “The Godfather” type feel. Driver is supposed to shoot Coppola’s “Megalopolis” in October, so he might be going straight to that one after completing Mann’s film....

Now, at the 11th hour, Sony’s also changed the title of the movie, a little more than a week before release. The original “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” has been replaced with “Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance With Somebody.” Panic? You’re trying to tell me that the demographic for this movie wouldn’t know that that the titular song was by Whitney? Now the film is veering even more into Lifetime movie territory....

More films were announced by the New York Film Festival this morning. This time it’s the Spotlight section, which is a notch below the Main Slate. Luca Guadagnino’s “Bones & All,” Sarah Polley’s “Women Talking,” Maria Schrader’s “She Said,” and Chinonye Chukwu’s “Til” will be screening, among others. That settles it then, Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu’s “Bardo,” Florian Zeller’s “The Son,” Darren Aronofsky’s “The Whale,” Martin McDonagh’s “The Banshees of Inisherin,” and Sam Mendes’ “Empire of Light,” are officially not New York bound....

As it stands, “Fire of Love” is the current frontrunner to win the Best Documentary Oscar. However, that could change rapidly with two big titles incoming at the fall fests. Coming up is Laura Poitras’ “All the Beauty and the Bloodshed” produced by Participant which will be in competition at Venice and was chosen as the New York Film Festival Centerpiece Film. Then there’s Steve James’ “A Compassionate Spy,” set to premiere at Venice, Telluride, Toronto and Chicago....

The reception was overwhelmingly positive, not that surprising given the setting and selective audience in attendance. Actual critics will be watching this at a press screening on Thursday. I won’t tackle the minor controversy that has been spurred on social media surrounding the age gap between Alana Haim and Cooper Hoffman’s characters. That, to me, is such a non-issue especially since it is based on the real-life teenage experiences of producer Gary Goetzman....

“Harriet” was directed by Kasi Lemmons. “Queen & Slim” is the feature-length debut of filmmaker Melina Matsoukas. DuVernay’s post garnered a response from “The Farewell” director Lulu Wang, who could, humorously, relate to DuVernay’s plight. “If I could count the number of times someone’s held up a ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ poster for me to sign,” the director wrote. “I mean, Jon M. Chu is beautiful and all, but I’m quite certain we look nothing alike....
