I’ve spoken to a contact from Warner Bros. who says they are monitoring the COVID situation quite intensely and that no decision has been made yet about “The Batman’s” release. However, if the first few theatrical months of 2022 are still very much at a free fall due to Omicron, a summer date has already been chosen for “The Batman.” The peak of the new Omicron variant hasn’t even arrived yet....
Breaking Bad (AMC)2. Mad Men (AMC)3. Fleabag (BBC)4. The Leftovers (HBO)5. Game of Thrones (HBO)6. Twin Peaks: The Return (Showtime)7. The Americans (FX)8. Atlanta (FX)9. Bojack Horseman (Netflix)10. Veep (HBO) The BBC decided to tackle similar territory with The 100 Greatest TV Series of the 21st Century. Around 206 industry professionals voted. It’s a considerably solid list, but I will never, for the life of me, understand why “Fleabag” keeps making these lists....
A (working?) title has also appeared, as Allen’s upcoming film is currently being called “Wasp 22.” No plot synopsis or additional cast details have been revealed, although there keep being rumors that Isabelle Huppert will star. My intel from a month ago proved to be correct. Woody Allen later confirmed, in an interview with Alec Baldwin, that he would indeed be shooting his upcoming dark drama in Paris this fall....
Now, here comes another knockout of non-fiction filmmaking. It’s impossible to shake off David France’s “Welcome to Chechnya,” which deals with what faces gay, lesbian, and transgender Chechens on a daily basis — the blatant homophobia in their home country is filled with the denial of their humanity. France, a former journalist turned filmmaker, tackles the aggressive effort by Russian-backed Chechnya to entirely erase LGBTQ from their population. Call it a “purge,” if you will, but that would unfairly simplify the human rights atrocities committed by this Putin-backed government into just a single, measly word....
On Thursday afternoon, media outlets and press will be treated to the patron screening, an annual tradition that delivers a “secret screening” not announced in the programming. Telluride boss Julie Huntsinger added that it will not be “The French Dispatch,” or “The Card Counter,” but that it “doesn’t eliminate the possibility of either popping up as special screenings over the five-day fest”. As mentioned, both films were supposed to be part of this year’s programming, but surprisingly didn’t show up in today’s lineup — why?...
It wasn’t that shocking of a result at the time. The list first appeared in 1952, and “Vertigo” (1958) made the list for the first time only in 1982. Much like many of the films on the current list, it slowly, but surely climbed up over the decades. It managed to place five votes behind ‘Kane’ in 2002. In 2012, “Vertigo” dethroned ‘Kane,’ a film that held the top spot for almost three decades....
Rumors have been building up over the last few months that the theater chain might be on the verge of bankruptcy. Earlier on Monday, AMC announced it was raising $47.7 million in cash to stay open — its shares plunged soon after the news. As of the end of last week, AMC was operating approximately 539 of its 600 domestic locations, and approximately 261 of its 358 international locations. However, people are just not going back to theaters due to the persistent fear of going to public places during this pandemic and/or the lack of big movie titles being released....
The usuals won the acting categories: Blanchett, Farrell, and Huy-Quan. However, surprise, Janelle Monae won Supporting Actress for her turn in “Glass Onion.” Also, Claudio Miranda also won his second cinematography award this season, after last week’s NYFCC prize, and he’s right now turning into a force to be reckoned with. The big story however is “RRR”. With its NYFCC Best Director win and now placing in the Atlanta top 10, not to mention winning their International Feature award, we should start keeping an eye out on this one....
Christian Bale’s transformation in “Vice” is stunning; Bradley Cooper can be toasted as the “it-boy” of the industry for writing-directing-producing and starring in a the high-grossing movie “A Star is Born”; Viggo Mortensen is the heart and soul of “Green Book,” a crowd-pleasing film that is already being touted as a serious Best Picture contender; Ethan Hawke, well-loved by everyone, has never won an Oscar and his career-best work performance in “First Reformed” could very-well be too irresistible for the Academy to ignore; Finally, Rami Malek’s passionate performance as Freddie Mercury in “Bohemian Rhapsody” is the kind of work that launches a career to the stratosphere....
The magazine claims to have spent close to a year into the investigation, citing “more than 50 sources.” The victims interviewed said they were “psychologically damaged, with substance-abuse problems, depression, and PTSD” due to the trauma of Singer’s behavior. Singer slammed back at the allegations, shouting “homophobia” in a just-released statement: “The last time I posted about this subject, Esquire magazine was preparing to publish an article written by a homophobic journalist who has a bizarre obsession with me dating back to 1997....
It is looking more and more like the 2020 Cannes Film Festival will be canceled, especially after French President Emmanuel Macron’s announcement today of an extended ban in France for all public events, including festivals, until mid-July. Yikes. Will the 73rd annual Cannes Film Festival be canceled for the first time since a ‘60s social protest, led by Truffault and Godard, slammed the doors shut for the event? The festival was supposed to take place this year from May 12-May 23, but, due to the coronavirus pandemic, festival organizers pushed it to a potential “late June to early July” happening....
A 4K restored version of Dennis Hopper‘s “Easy Rider” could be in the cards. Hopper’s film will be shown on the 50th anniversary of its Cannes debut. Peter Fonda will attend the screening. I was never big on “Easy Rider,” always thought it felt like a product of its time for its time, but I’m willing to give it another shot, especially if it means it’ll be screened in 4k....
The film depicts the life of the title character J. Robert Oppenheimer, who had an involvement in WWII’s Manhattan Project, which earned him the moniker of the “father of the atomic bomb.” Back to the first still released, it was a black-and-white picture of Cillian Murphy as Oppenheimer. According to IndieWire, “Oppenheimer” is the first film to shoot in IMAX black-and-white analog photography. Nolan’s first two films, “Following” and “Memento”, we’re also shot this way, with the latter using it for time-related scenes....
Word is that they are unsure what the best route for “Babylon” will be come awards season. Fests or no fests? That is the question they are currently pondering for the December release. Everyone wants to see a “La La Land” rollout for “Babylon” (Venice, TIFF, Telluride), but the film is said to be a whole other beast. Rarely, has a major studio premiered a late-December 180 minute release in September....
During an interview with Daily Pioneer, the director discussed Marvel and Disney approaching her to direct “Black Widow.” “I received an e-mail from Marvel for a meeting. Because they were looking for directors for ‘Black Widow’. So I went to the reunion. I actually signed this thing where I can’t talk about that reunion. Marvel and other such production houses are trying to involve more female filmmakers,” Martel said. She continued on, “I do believe another female director is making the movie (now)....

Nearing his 83rd birthday, Coppola is clearly not calling it quits and finally ready to make “Megalopolis.” The script is ready, and casting looks locked. A fall 2022 production —rumored to be an epic 6-month shoot — would most likely render “Megalopolis” as a 2023 release. Long known as his dream project, for close to three decades, Coppola hasn’t directed a movie since 2011’s “Twixt,” which was part of his black and white trilogy that also included 2007’s “Youth Without Youth,” and 2009’s “Tetro....
This is not the first time Frank Stallone has leaped to Social media with a grievance over his brother’s treatment in the industry. Following his unexpected loss to Mark Rylance in the supporting actor category at the 2016 Oscars, he took to twitter claiming Sly Stallone had been ‘ripped off, period’. He also stated ‘If you love any of the previous Rambo’s, you’re going to love this film’, and whilst the jury couldn’t be further out on that claim at the minute, audiences (as we saw last year with the likes of ‘Fantastic Beasts’ and most namely “Bohemian Rhapsody”) have responded on the opposite ends to critics, with the films audience score on Rotten Tomatoes at 84%, and its IMDB score currently sat at 7....
