Although officially planned for an October and November 2019 release in the UK and the U.S. respectively, the movie is now expected to be released on the 3rd April of 2020 in UK cinemas and will hit the States five days later, on April 8th. One of the main reasons for the pushback is due to director Danny Boyle unexpectedly quitting the project a mere few weeks before shooting was to begin....

Adam Driver seems to have taken the lead role, edging out potential competition from Christian Bale, Matt Damon and Chris Pine. Al Pacino is said to have been cast in a small role. Last September, I had written a piece about Will Smith’s potential Oscar dilemma. There was a stunning rumor that was being spread by a publicist during the Telluride Film Festival that Smith wasn’t vaxxed and that’s why he was a no-show at the fest. The months went ahead, “King Richard” consequently screened at the BFI London Film Festival and he was still a no-show. For someone who is a major Oscar contender to refrain from showing up to these fests or campaign, you’d have to think that something was off....

Yorgos Lanthimos’ much anticipated tackling of Frankenstein is not going to be released this year. “Poor Things” is now on officially a 2023 release. I was still holding out some hope after hearing that it wasn’t ready a month or so ago, alas, that intel turned out to be true. Now maybe we’ll get to see it at Berlin or Cannes. The film, which wrapped shooting around January (maybe even earlier) stars Emma Stone and Mark Ruffalo....

What better middle finger to Trump than to reward an all-Mexican film the Oscar, probably the most overt political statement one can make this awards season with any movie, safe for, maybe, Spike Lee’s “BlackKklansman” which ends with a scathing, 3-minute indictment of the Trump administration and has the veteran filmmaker, quite explicitly, telling his audience we have a neo-Nazi, sympathizing president in the White House. First and foremost, the films vying for top honors this year are not the absolute best we were going to get this year. There were lots of scheduling delays due to lockdowns and cinema closures, to the point where I’m suspecting that next year will be stacked to the roof with quality films. According to Variety, “The Democratic Party of Orange County passed an emergency resolution this week calling on the Orange County Board of Supervisors to change the name of John Wayne Airport.” The resolution “condemns John Wayne’s racist and bigoted statements,” calling him “white supremacist, anti-LGBT and anti-Indigenous.” This anti-Wayne sentiment really started more than a year ago, based on a 1971 interview Wayne gave to Playboy Magazine where he came off as utterly bigoted towards African-Americans, Native-Americans, and homosexuals....

Scott isn’t just a workaholic, churning out almost one movie per year, but in his nearly five-decade career he’s managed to release as many great films as he has mediocre ones.
