Buzz is building on Burns’ movie. “The Report” was praised by critics back in January at Sundance, I was a fan, writing that it was “a brutal and unforgiving journey into the deepest pits of governmental corruption.” Knowing what’s going on right now with the FBI/CIA abuses being uncovered, I would think this is a fairly relevant movie to watch, especially a few months from now … Here’s the official synopsis from Sundance: “Senate staffer Daniel Jones (Adam Driver) is assigned the daunting task of leading an investigation into the CIA’s Detention and Interrogation Program....

The drama revolves around a family torn apart by a depressed teenage boy. This boy is Nicholas (Zen McGrath), and a couple of years after his parents’ divorce, the 17-year-old no longer believes he can stay with his mother, Kate (a low-key Laura Dern). Nicholas decides to move in with his father Peter (Hugh Jackman) and Peter’s new partner Beth (Vanessa Kirby). For a while, things seem to get better, but, of course, given the severe mental health issues this boy has, he also starts to rebel against Peter and Beth....

South African actress Thuso Mbedu plays a slave named Cora who manages to escape her brutal Georgia plantation, and by brutal I do mean the all-encompassing definition of that word. The white and very racist owner burns slaves alive and whips them to near collapse for the entertainment of his posh dinner guests. Cora manages to find the Underground Railroad, which Jenkins and Whitehead mollify here as a way for slaves to escape to the Northern states via a “magical” train, but in real life the railroad was a network of safehouses that helped escaped slaves reach free states and Canada (there was no train)....

Director Luca Guadagnino was bound to premiere his new HBO series, “We Are Who We Are,” a set of coming of age stories in Italy, at Cannes as part of the 2020 Director’s Fortnight section. Paolo Moretti, who heads Directors’ Fortnight, had mentioned that he had been plotting a continuous screening of the eight-hour movie, with a lunch break in the middle. ”This is one of our big regrets as it would have been quite something to show an eight-hour film....

I’m betting the farm that, if they do go this route, Anthony Mackie will be sought to play Captain America. He currently plays Sam Wilson, aka Falcon and has starred in two previous ‘Captain America’ films, as well as “Avengers: Age of Ultron” and “Avengers: Infinity War.” Sam Wilson has been Captain America in the comic books, recently taking over for Steve Rogers after the character stepped down. Suffice to say, odds are with Mackie to garner the much-coveted role at the moment....

A film filled with tense moments that very much feels organic and attuned to the rest of their filmography. “Young Ahmed” will no doubt cause a stir, and it already has if you’ve read some of the reviews that were just published amid its Cannes premiere yesterday, but don’t be fooled by the political biases of some, this is top-notch work from the Dardennes, filled with their usual birds-eye-view camerawork, solid acting from nonprofessionals and a searing screenplay which builds up the tension with every scene....

A test screening of “The Northman” is set for next week at a Burbank, California AMC theatre. I know a few thespians who will be there and are set to report back on their thoughts. Regardless, this leaves us with a total of 35 films that have the potential to be great in 2021, every single one of them will be released this fall (with the exception of one). The Fall festival circuit will be jam-packed with quality this season, and I imagine it’ll be a historic one given that both TIFF and NYFF are going hybrid (digital and in-person) again this year....

I saw the film at the Toronto International Film Festival back in 2019. It has already been released in the U.K. (appearing on a boatload of 2020 top ten lists). It was supposed to also be released Stateside last year, but the COVID-19 pandemic forced A24 to reschedule it. Honestly, I’m kind of surprised it hasn’t been delayed further, considering almost 70% of U.S. theaters are closed, which is why I’m refraining from posting my review for now....

Taylor-Johnson had a secret screen test with Bond producer Barbara Broccoli at Pinewood studios in November, and it went so well that an announcement of his casting is in the works for the Spring of 2023. Still a rumor, I guess, but who are we kidding here? There’s been no denial from Broccoli and company as word keeps spreading throughout the film world. As far as I’m concerned, it’s probably a done deal....

I always thought race shaming was anti-intellectual by nature and this is a great example of that. Perhaps reparations will satisfy these white self-haters? It’s all part of the far-left guilt being spewed all around the media and by irresponsible elected representatives. If you’re a democratic candidate and you want a shot at winning and beating Trump in 2020 then you must surely know that this anti-white rhetoric will no doubt isolate you from more than half of the available American populace?...

I’ve heard three reactions thus far for the film, all mediocre. It seems as though Sandler was badly miscast in a role that demanded a range of emotions. The screenplay is said to also be very weak. The film is based on a true story, Procházka was orphaned as a boy and raised in the Czech countryside by his grandparents, but overcame his odds to become the country’s first astronaut....

A test screening of “Wendy” finally happened earlier this week. The response was fairly muted. It does seem like the magical realism of “Beasts of the Southern Wild” is again on full-display in “Wendy,” and the fact that they are now screening it is a promising sign that we will indeed be seeing Zeitlin’s movie this fall. The plan seems to be to submit the film to the fall festivals, a bow at TIFF is all but assured at this point, but after “Beasts Of The Southern Wild” was hailed at Cannes, Sundance and the Oscars, this much-anticipated follow-up is destined to feel left out of the conversation quickly....

According to THR, Cooper is in talks to star in the new untitled film written and directed by PTA. As we’ve mentioned in past articles, the latest, and highly-secretive, film from the director takes place in Southern California during the 1970s and follows a kid actor’s teen years attending high school in the San Fernando Valley. The THR report states that Anderson’s latest was supposed to begin production in spring/summer of this year, but COVID-19 delayed all that....

“Hit the Road” premiered in the 2021 edition of the Quinzaine does Realisateurs. It’s an endearing film that follows a chaotic family on a road trip across a rugged Iranian landscape as they get on each others’ nerves. The jury chosen to select the Bazin award was composed of filmmaker Arnaud Desplechin, actress Lyna Khoudri, dancer/choreographer Benjamin Millepied, cinematographer Céline Bozon, Cahiers assistant editor Charlotte Garson, Cahiers editor-in-chief Marcos Uzal, and student Zoé Lhuillier....

“No Time To Die,” the 25th James Bond movie, has just had its April release date pushed back a full 8 months to November 25th. According to a report from Deadline, Universal, MGM, and producers have decided that it is way too risky to have an April window for a movie that will likely make a big chunk of its worldwide gross in Asia and Europe. As you know, China completely shut down its film industry two weeks ago and European countries, especially Italy, are seeing a daily increase of cases....

I always pay attention to any interview he does, whatever new things he has to say. Another brutally honest sitdown with Lynch, this time with THR, has the filmmaker being asked about quarantine, film, TV and Denis Villeneuve’s upcoming “Dune.” It’s a short but mandatory read for any cinephile, especially at a time when people are freaking out in isolation, not knowing what the future world will look like even a week from now....
