It wasn’t just “Avengers: Endgame.” ($2.8 billion worldwide). There was also “Toy Story 4” ($1 billion ), “Aladdin” ($1 billion), “Lion King” (1.6 billion) and “Dumbo” ($350 million). Disney still has three major titles waiting to be released this year: “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil,” “Frozen 2″ and, especially, “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.” All of these movies are expected to make big bucks, which has led some experts into predicting that Disney may very well account for more than 50% of the U....

This would be Ryan’s third collaboration with the Greek auteur. And so, despite people telling me that it would not be a shot-for-shot remake of the original, well, this 2019 Lion King kind of was. The screenplay was quasi-similar to the animated movie. After you started to get used to the stunning VFX, there was nothing left to cling on, just a retread of the same old story. The animated version had more emotions in its characters, more humanity in the hand-drawn than the coldly distanced VFX of Favreau’s version....

I presume any day now we will have one. However, we do now have our first photos of the movie. Vanity Fair released the first images for “Da 5 Bloods,” which follows four Black soldiers that return to Vietnam to find the remains of their commander, while also looking for a buried treasure… The cast of the film includes Chadwick Boseman, Delroy Lindo, Isiah Whitlock Jr....

Fox Rich, “entrepreneur”, abolitionist, and mother of six boys has spent the last twenty or so years fighting for the release of her husband, Rob G. Rich, who is serving a 60-year sentence for a robbery they both committed in the early ‘90s. Bradley means to tell us that it was all done in a moment of desperation, but the best evidence that he comes up with is the Rich family’s intentions to open up a hip-hop store....

During a master class he gave at the Red Sea Film Festival in Saudi Arabia, Noé spoke about wanting to make a film about preschoolers: Noé is a major fan of Bruno Dumont’s “Lil Quinquin,” which also inspired Sean Baker to make “The Florida Project” — maybe its influence has now crept up into Noé‘s creative conscience as well. This would be a departure for Noé who is known as the master provocateur behind such shocking films as “Irreversible,” “Enter the Void” and “Climax”....

There is now reporting that ‘Furiosa’ is set to start filming in April. Taking on Charlize Theron’s role of Furiosa will be Anya Taylor-Joy [via Variety]. Joining her in the cast will be Chris Hemsworth and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II in unspecified roles. Details about the plot are still unknown, but this ‘Furiosa’ prequel will focus on the early days of the character, and how she grew to be the war captain under Immortan Joe....

I’m telling you this right now: the industry will most likely be in partial shutdown again because of the growing hysteria going on due to Omicron. At this point, there’s no way around it and we haven’t even gotten close to the peak impact of the variant at home. Europeans are all starting to feel it already. You might imagine the organizers behind next January’s Sundance Film Festival are doing somersaults over their decision to make their entire lineup available digitally....

There was fear, hate, and hysteria and “1985,” Crafted by Malaysian-born writer/director Yen Tan, has the intention of showing us how things have not changed all that much thirty years later. His story tackles themes that have resonated in the American consciousness for decades; those of identity, the struggles of coming out, secrets (due to fear of telling the truth), acceptance, intolerance, and the crisis of loving family who may not love you back for who you are....

Bond producer Barbara Broccoli: “Bond is not on active service when the film starts. He is enjoying himself in Jamaica. We consider Jamaica Bond’s spiritual home. He starts his journey here.” Director Cary Fukunaga (“Beasts of No Nation”) will be directing the film. Good luck to Fukunaga, but does anyone sense a feeling of panic settling in with this one? Director Danny Boyle was fired due to creative differences, the series is coming off one of its very worst installments (“Spectre”) and there is a lot of pressure to de-whiten Bond for the future, with even Idris Elba being touted as the main contender to take over the 007 throne....

However, let’s not get too ahead of ourselves here, the chances of this new version getting released are fairly low, especially since it isn’t being backed by a movement as loudly defiant as Zack Snyder and his fans’ campaign to get his version of “Justice League” released. The real question we should be asking is who actually wants a new version of “Batman Forever”? Considering the tragic passing of Schumacher last week, this nearly 3-hour version of “Batman Forever has been discussed at arm’s length in some movie circles the past week....

Padilha’s role as producer and primary director of the Netflix original series “Narcos” propelled him to global renown, although he was already highly regarded domestically for his work in a string of Brazilian movies. The Hollywood Reporter describes Dead or Alive’s plot as an “epic tale”, with the storyline following two men who were pivotal to the spread of Brazilian jiu-jitsu. Mitsuyo Maeda traveled from Japan to Brazil as an ambassador for the martial art, where he adopted an inspired Carlos Gracie as his student....

The Crown’s Emma Corrin had shared her thoughts on the matter a few weeks ago, this has influenced the LAT to write this rather silly op-ed. Corrin identifies as non-binary (hey, so do I!) She believes that the Oscars should go gender-neutral and move towards categories that would encompass those who don’t identify as male or female (such as Corrin and myself). As I stated in the late summer: Sooner or later, this kind of gender ideology will infect the Oscars....

I can see Goth nabbing that LAFCA prize for Best Actress. She’s phenomenal in Ti West’s movie. Whether you liked “Pearl” or not, it’s very hard to deny just how great Goth is in the movie. She brilliantly uses multiple ranges of emotions to convey a character who is, essentially, a naive and delusional psychopath. My pal Jen Yamato recently wrote about Goth and “Pearl.” Don’t read until you’ve seen the movie though....

Moore will play the role of Verna (Moore), who embarks on a luxurious cruise in the Arctic Northwest Passage. It’s on this cruise ship that she meets two characters, friendly and charming Grace (Oh), and the shy but mysterious Bob, an unaccompanied man in his mid-sixties who inherited a family business. Ramsay is the maverick director behind “Ratcatcher,” We Need to Talk About Kevin,” Morven Callar,” and “You Were Never Really Here....

The material at hand, Winslet plays a Philadelphia detective investigating the murder of teenage mother Erin (Cailee Spaeny), while trying to keep her own life from falling apart, could have easily fallen into maudlin, but the fact that it doesn’t is a testament to both Winslet’s fierce talents as an actress and the film’s sure-handed confidence in unveiling its underlying mysteries throughout the seven episodes. There are multiple suspects who roam the streets of Easttown, I counted more than half a dozen, and that keeps things springing, but this show should be seen more as a powerful portrait of grief, trauma, and the skeletons we keep hidden in our closets at night than any unsolved mysteries....

DiCaprio and De Niro previously worked together on 1993’s “This Boy’s Life” and 1994’s “Marvin’s Room.” However, although longtime acting collaborators, they have never worked together on a Martin Scorsese movie. In the new interview with Cahiers, Scorsese hinted at ‘Killers’ potentially being a Western, even though it takes place in the 20th century. “We think it’s a Western,” he said. “It happened in 1921-1922 in Oklahoma. They are certainly cowboys, but they have cars and also horses....

Marvel Studios is finally going to be making a stand-alone “Black Widow” movie with Johansson and directed by Cate Shortland. This has us all very excited and today’s news was just icing on the cake as its been reported that Johannson will be making just as much as her counterparts in the MCU. As per THR “Scarlett Johansson, who has appeared in six movies as Black Widow, is finally landing a $15 million payday for an upcoming stand-alone film centered on the Marvel superheroine” “That salary is what Chris Evans and Chris Hemsworth each earned for playing Captain America and Thor, respectively, in this year’s Avengers: Infinity War....

”Young Sinner” screenwriter Ed Neumeier shared plot details with Hammond and, suffice to say, this sounds very Verhoeven-esque: “Young Sinner is a political thriller set in Washington, D.C.,” Neumeier says. “Our heroine, a young staffer who works for a powerful Senator, is drawn into a web of international intrigue and danger, and of course there is also a little sex.” “I really think that what Neumeier and I, at this moment, want to do with this script, Young Sinner, will be an innovative version of movies like Fatal Attraction and Basic Instinct,” Verhoeven explains....
