Jim Jarmusch‘s “The Dead Don’t Die” will be screened and open the 2019 Cannes Film Festival (5.14 to 5.25), and in competition — a world premiere. Nothing surprising there as we had mentioned this news item a few weeks back. Again, we’re always on the ball with these sorta things.Rumor has it that Pablo Larrain’s “Ema” will not make it to Cannes because, wait for it, the film was just bought by Netflix....

I am here to today tell you of another almost shoo-in and that’s Terrence Malick’s “Radegund.” The Independent ran a story last fall that we could expect Terrence Malick’s “Radegund” to premiere either at Toronto or Venice. That didn’t happen. Neither did Berlin this past February. Is Cannes going to be the place where we finally see Malick’s latest opus? I have been told by two separate French sources that Malick has shown “footage” of “Radegund” and that the plan is to, indeed, premiere it at Cannes this coming May....

Here’s the thing, if you’re a expecting a normal edition to happen then forget about it, that just won’t be the case. Masks, testing stations, and social distancing will all be set in place to pull off the event. That means something akin to how Venice did it last September. Traveling to Cannes for Americans will also be another major issue, I don’t expect much U.S. press to make the voyage, ditto films from major studios....

Christopher McQuarrie has just come off from making the two best Mission: Impossible. Yes, Brad Bird’s “Ghost Protocol” has to be part of the conversation as well, but I now believe that what McQuarrie and Cruise have done to elevate action to sheer art with these last two installments is nothing short of groundbreaking for the major studio blockbuster. I presume more studios will now be trying to one-up McQuarrie’s M:I films by using more practical effects because, quite frankly, audiences have shown that they want their action to be delivered with the kind of realism CGI cannot replicate....

Screen Daily is reporting that Denis’s next film, a Nicaragua-set romantic thriller titled “Stars At Noon”, will star Robert Pattinson and Margaret Qualley, and is due to shoot in April 2021. It looks as though this is an adaptation of Denis Johnson’s novel of the same name. Wikipedia has the plot going like this: “The novel follows an unnamed American woman, supposedly a journalist, living in Managua, Nicaragua in 1984, during Sandinista rule....

With all that being said, I’m happy to share the new trailer for “Malmkrog,” the latest Puiu film, which is debuting at the Berlin Film Festival next week. Given that this is Puiu, the film clocks in at an astounding 3 hours and 21 minutes, and centers on a Christmas dinner, filled with cultural and political discussion, at an aristocrat’s mansion. The film is made up almost entirely of conversations between the guests at the luxurious household....

The dominant trend in our sixth mid-year critics poll seems to lean towards cinematic quality during the first half of this year deriving almost exclusively from the indie and foreign circuit. Although many abstained from participating in this year’s poll, almost uniformly due to their not being able to come up with a handful of worthy movies to submit, we still managed to compile 100 critics lists and the results are curiously intriguing, to say the least....

Lynch’s “Dune” is well-known to be one of the worst flops in Hollywood history and one of the worst studio movies ever made. It’s almost unwatchable. I don’t think I’ve ever been able to go through its 137 minutes. I’ve tried, because I’m a Lynch completest, but good God is it bad. Even David Lynch seems to agree. Lynch uploaded a brand new 40-minute Q&A video to YouTube in which he answered a bunch of fan questions submitted via social media....

The screenlife device works quite well— this intimate and personal portrayal of COVID-19 angst has Berman challenging himself to tell his short story in new and exciting ways. The narrative unfolds in nontraditional fashion as a mix of personal feelings, washed-up celebrities, and paranoid Google searches blend together in artfullly amusing ways. When Berman started working on the film he was, and still is, in lockdown in his Los Angeles home, where, for most of his days, he was taking up meetings for a handful of commercial and documentary series jobs....

Despite its success, I am not in a rush to subscribe to Disney Plus. Beyond “The Mandalorian,” there isn’t much I’m willing to watch or rewatch, however, new content will be their main strategy in the next few years, especially with the China Virus likely continuing on for most of 2021 and millions of Americans unwilling to go to a movie theater. That’s why Disney is set to spend close to 9 billion dollars on new content between now and 2024....

“Atlanta” writer-actor Donald Glover knows this and he recently elaborated on the above, claiming the reason for so much “boring stuff” on TV and at the movies is due to fear of being “canceled”. He tweeted “Saw people on here havin a discussion about how tired they were of reviewing boring stuff (tv & film). we’re getting boring stuff and not even experimental mistakes(?) because people are afraid of getting cancelled....

Yes, this is just a picture of Cillian Murphy with a hat on. Oppenheimer was a chain-smoker, so it’s unsurprising to see a cigarette in his mouth. The cast Nolan had assembled for “Oppenheimer” is astonishing; Cillian Murphy, Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr. Florence Pugh, Rami Malek, Benny Safdie, Josh Hartnett, Kenneth Branagh and Alden Ehrenreich. Not sure what to make of these Grecian black & gold costumes. A reader by the name of Gary wrote, “Hope to God this doesn’t end up as a kind of “Star Trek: Plato’s Stepchildren” looking thing.” We’re also presuming Laboeuf is in costume here for “Megalopolis” and he doesn’t go around dressed like this normally. Coppola has had this film storyboarded and ready to go for a few decades now, one has to wonder if he’s updated these storyboards at all in recent years....

The clear and concerted effort by the WB to completely revamp a post-Snyder DCEU is in full swing - Matt Reeves “The Batman” starring Robert Pattinson, Cathy Yan’s “Birds of Prey,” Patti Jenkins’ “Wonder Woman 1984,” Todd Phillips’ “Joker,” James Gunn’s “Suicide Squad,” and James Wan’s “Aquaman 2” are all expected to be released within the next few years. Hugh Jackman and Laura Dern will star in Florian Zeller’s sophomore effort, after his triumphant Oscar-winning “The Father.” Adapted by Zeller from his own acclaimed stage play, “The Son” has an October release date which probably means no New York Film Festival. It will most likely be submitted to Venice, Telluride and Toronto. Zeller also has a stage play called “The Mother.” Who wants to bet that’ll be his next feature film?...

Del Toro is taking his much-earned time to put the finishing touches on his film, not to mention adding a brand new score from “Knives Out” composer Nathan Johnson. The film’s December release date does still give del Toro some much-needed wiggle room. Back in late August, we learned that del Toro was rushing a final print for possible inclusion at the Venice Film Festival, but the movie just wasn’t ready on time....

Angel Bassett, who stared in ‘Panther’ has been quoted as saying “In my mind, it has the Oscar. I think it deserves it,” she explained while promoting her upcoming Transformers film, “Bumblebee.” Whereas, Collider’s Adam Chitwood just wrote an op-ed pleadingthe case that ‘Panther’ is worthy of a Picture nomination.
