I’m rather mixed on his Best Picture winner “The Last Emperor,” a well-photographed but meandering epic that could only be made to win the big prize in the ’80s. No, the Bertolucci will forever love and adore is the artist that gave us the Marlon Brando/Maria Schneider controversy-ridden “Last Tango in Paris,” a film that broke barriers for sex on-screen and which depicted a sexually-charged relationship between a widowed man and a young woman....

Back in late August, we had learned that del Toro was rushing a final print for possible inclusion at the Venice Film Festival, but the movie just wasn’t completed on time. Now, here we are, two full months later and the 139 minute film is still awaiting final cut. Albeit, its December release date does still give del Toro some time, but if the plan is to premiere the film at the Academy Museum in a few weeks then he’s really playing with fire....
We hadn’t heard from the Chinese-born Taiwanese filmmaker since his 2015 wuxia epic “The Assassin.” Then, very early this year, there was news that his long-developing drama “Shulan River” was finally beginning location scouting (via IONCINEMA). It could very well be the master’s final film. Hou’s best-known films include “A City of Sadness,” “Flowers of Shanghai,” and “The Puppetmaster.” His style is as arthouse as it gets, but there’s a real beauty to his images that just sucks you right into its frames....

Rajamouli if he ever feels bad that he is not able to tell new stories because of all these “Avatar” movies. Supposedly, the budget for the upcoming Scorsese-directed Paramount-distributed film had inflated to a worrisome $225M that it started to get Paramount a little too anxious about the commercial prospects of the film, which led Scorsese to call Netflix to settle a rights and distribution deal for ‘Killers.’ The Wall Street Journal has now officially confirmed what we suspected in late February [via a report] that, indeed, Scorsese’s representatives are trying to get either Netflix or, even, AppleTV+ to produce and/or distribute the star-studded crime-thriller....
