The just-released trailer sets up the 14th century-set world that Lowery has concocted for us. A medieval fantasy film based on the poem, ‘Sir Gaiwin and the Green Knight” which was was written by an anonymous, 14th-century British poet. Only one copy of the poem survived to this day, “The Green Knight” is no doubt a risk-taking venture for A24 since it deals with fantasy, a genre they have rarely tackled in their past films....

Regardless, according to the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC), there were a record-number 64 moviegoer complaints about the movie last year, all of which complained that its 15 rating was too low. “Receiving 50 complaints was the children’s animation Peter Rabbit. A scene in which the rabbits pelt the human character Tom McGregor with blackberries in the knowledge that he is allergic to them – even shooting one into his mouth – until he is forced to use an EpiPen to treat his reaction....

The release delays that have affected this film have been very frustrating for all the creatives involved. Production on the film started in November of 2019 and wrapped before that year was done. It was originally scheduled for release on November 13, 2020, but was then delayed to August 13, 2021, and again to January 14, 2022. It will finally be screened on March 18th, 2022 via HULU streaming. I wrote in late 2021: The rumor had been that a streamer was willing to buy “Deep Water” off of Disney’s hands, who were none-too-pleased by the film’s hard R-rating, not to mention its staggering 2 hour and 33 minute runtime and the recently broken up Affleck/De Armas refusing to do promotion on the film....

Not many people knew the screening was happening. Just 24 hours after that screening, Focus Features bought “The Holdovers” for a whopping $30 million. It was by far the biggest deal at TIFF, possibly ever for the festival. According to The Wrap, there was interest from “multiple parties” before Focus won out in the auction. The good news is that early reactions to “The Holdovers” are very strong. The film is not 100% finished....

When Gray does hit the mark (“Two Lovers,” “Lost City of Z”) something mysteriously beautiful is achieved, the kind of cinematic bliss that reminds us why we love the movies so much. Park’s film was screened on a Wednesday night at Cannes. It was the ninth day of the festival, attendees were tired and there were people sleeping all around me. It recently screened at TIFF and NYFF in September. The film is a convoluted detective noir that probably benefits from multiple viewings. Park uses bizarre zoom ins, POV shots, and character’s recreating crimes in their mind and being shown in the action (even though they weren’t part of it)....

These are my takeaways: Kristen Stewart (Spencer) was again absent from the Best Actress category. After the SAG snub, being ignored by BAFTA as well now means K-Stew is destined to not even get nominated. Just a few months ago, she was the frontrunner to win. In fact, “Spencer” received n0 nominations, anywhere. No Chastain, Colman, Kidman, or Stewart in the Lead Actress category. Does that mean Gaga is the frontrunner?...

I’m guessing Apple TV+ didn’t even come close to these Disney+ numbers because if they had then we would be hearing about it through a press release of some sort. Regardless, they were never going to come close, mostly due to the Mouse House having a way more stacked catalogue of original and archival content than Apple’s. Don’t get me wrong, “Aladdin” will still make a gazillion dollars at the Box-Office, plenty of parents will bring their kids to see it, nostalgia-driven millennials will make the trek as well, it’s all very predictable. Of course, I will be there, sitting at the press screening, quite possibly at the Boston Commons AMC, waiting to be impressed by the film, I want my low expectations to be exceeded, I really do....

Netflix are going full-bore in campaigning “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery.” They know they have a major hit in their hands. The film is also their only Best Picture contender this year, unless you believe “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio” has a shot (I kind of do). I had a blast watching the film at TIFF a few weeks ago. It’s such a movie-movie, all it wants to do is entertain you and the filmmaking is slickly rendered by Johnson....

This is discouraging news. Hollywood adheres to trends and what sells; for example, they see a film like “Bohemian Rhapsody” being successful and automatically attempt to greenlight other rock biopics. These industry bigwigs see what’s happened this fall with the ‘adult drama’ and must surely think twice about greenlighting some more in the future. This is dire stuff. Albeit, the movies I’ve mentioned, many of which were indeed well-reviewed at film festivals, just weren’t all that good and audiences caught on to that, word of mouth is needed to succeed, not just rave reviews....

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, Twitter is an absolute cancer to Western society, it is one of the main responsible culprits for the destruction of free speech in our democracy. I would like nothing more than for Musk to be successful in his attempt to buy the social media company and then blow it up to smithereens. Musk should eclipse the cancerous slime that is Twitter....

Despite Weinstein trying to have a low-key evening at the Downtime Bar event, which supported young artists, the evening’s performers also did not hold back in calling out Weinstein onstage. Comedian Kelly Bachman called out Weinstein onstage, deeming him “the elephant in the room” and “Freddie Krueger” during her set. Said the report, “Weinstein turned up with an entourage to watch Actor’s Hour, a monthly event ‘dedicated to artists’ at the Downtime bar in the Lower East Side....

The kicker is that despite his pretentious world jumble, he still has the audacity to call it a “comedy.” On Monday night, Netflix screened 15 minutes of “Bardo” for a few Oscar pundits. One of them was puzzled by the enigmatic nature of what he saw on-screen, mentioning that he “wasn’t really sure what to make of it.” I’m still not entirely sure what Inarritu’s 3-hour movie is about. We’ll find out in a little less than two weeks from now when “Bardo” has its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival on September 1st....
