Netflix has been given a list of 50 movies from the MK2 Films catalog which will be streamed and spread out throughout 2020, beginning April 24 with the launch of 12 Truffaut classics: “Bed and Board,” “Fahrenheit 451,” “Confidentially Yours,” “Jules and Jim,” “Love on the Run,” “Shoot the Piano Player,” “Stolen Kisses,” “The 400 Blows,” “The Last Metro,” “The Soft Skin,” “The Woman Next Door,” and “Two English Girls....

“The Irishman” has a budget of $125 million, but the buzz is deafening for this upcoming movie which reunites Scorsese with his “Raging Bull,” “Goodfellas,” and “Casino” stars Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci. However, Netflix has other intriguing titles that could compete for awards this year: Steven Soderbergh’s “The Laundromat,” David Michôd’s “The King,” Dee Rees‘ “The Last Thing He Wanted,” and Fernando Meirelles‘ The Pope.” The sheer quality of the talents the streaming giant has acquired should sound the panic alarm back over in Hollywood Contribute Hire me...

According to THR, Hawley will be writing and directing the untitled “Star Trek 4” for Paramount. Most of the original cast of actors, such as Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, and Zoe Saldana, will be coming back for the sequel. However, don’t expect the R-rated Quentin Tarantino that has been in development for a few years now. So Hawley, who is best known for his TV work, is set to take over the ”Star Trek” franchise and lead it into a new era....

We need to stop complaining that this is “yet another Martin Scorsese mob movie.” Movies that are mob/crime/violence related in the Scorsese canon: Raging Bull, Taxi Driver, Mean Streets, Casino, Goodfellas, The Departed, The Wolf of Wall Street, Cape Fear, and The Irishman.That’s only 9 out of the 25 movies in his filmography. If Scorsese had only made The King of Comedy, After Hours, The Age of Innocence, The Last Temptation of Christ, Silence, Bringing Out the Dead, Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, Shutter Island, and The Aviator, he’d still be regarded as a top-tier director....

The prolific director has moved between psychological thriller, to drama, to comedy, all be it never allowing the films to lose that Soderbergh touch. Soderbergh retired in early 2013, clarifying that he had a five-year plan that saw him transitioning away from making feature films when he reached his 50th birthday. And yet, here we are at the end of the decade, and, so much for retirement, the legendary filmmaker has released 13 movies in the last 13 years....

Earlier this decade Kwan released a popular trilogy of books, “Crazy Rich Asians,” “China Rich Girlfriend,” “Rich People Problems,” which garnered him a spot on Time Magazine’s 100 most influential people’s list. These novels were sprawling, multi-generational takes on the Asian experience in America and abroad. As you might expect, in a zeitgeist straining for the need of cultural representation in art, Hollywood soon came calling. “Crazy Rich Asians” is the first cinematic adaptation of Kwan’s novels, a contemporary romantic comedy, based on his own childhood and which follows native New Yorker Rachel Chu (Constance Wu) as she travels to Singapore to meet boyfriend Nick’s (Henry Golding) disapproving family....

“Almost always, the best films are driven by the characters, and we’ll come to superheroes after this if you want, because I’ll crush it. I’ll fucking crush it. They’re fucking boring as shit .. Their scripts are not any fucking good … They’re superhero movies. So, why don’t the superhero movies have better stories? Sorry. I got off the rail, but I mean, c’mon. They’re mostly saved by special effects, and that’s becoming boring for everyone who works with special effects, if you’ve got the money....

I do want to elaborate further about “Marriage Story,” what with its unanimous rave reviews and the fact that pundits are, misguidingly, touting this film as a Best Picture frontrunner (it isn’t). At the end of the day, this is still a Noah Baumbach movie, albeit one done with a little more restraint and conventional wisdom than, say, his previous films. Maybe this is just the kind of statement he needed to make to finally graduate to Oscar contention....

More surprising, the omission of Andrew Dominik’s “Blonde,” which was 100% in competition at Venice just a few weeks ago. Suffice to say, some sort of last-minute entangled miscommunication occurred between Netflix and Venice — which resulted in festival boss Alberto Barbera deciding to nix that film as well from the lineup. I know, the balls on this man (Barbera). Can you imagine any other film festival rejecting Dominik and Coen world premieres?...

“Emancipation,” a slavery epic directed by Antoine Fuqua, had its first screening in DC three weeks ago. Attendees seem to have been mainly composed of African-American groups, celebs and political personalities. This screening was meant to kickstart buzz with glowing tweets. That’s just what happened. This weekend it was again screened, this time for some of Smith’s most famous friends, including Dave Chappelle, Rihanna, Tyler Perry, ASAP Rocky. Cancel culture?...

HBO is set to pull-off another heavily-biased accusatory documentary, purposely avoiding facts to further drive an obvious agenda, such as they did with the embarrassing “Finding Neverland.” This time around it’s the scandal and drama of “Allen V. Farrow. HBO Documentary Films announced the secretly-made new doc from “investigative filmmakers” Kirby Dick & Amy Ziering and Amy Herdy. A four-part documentary series that goes through the Woody Allen scandal, it seems the story being told here is through the eyes of the not-to-be-trusted Mia Farrow....

I guess it’s easier for me to separate the art from the artist, that’s just the way I roll, it must come from 4 years in film school where we had to dig in on the works of some pretty despicable people such as Nazi sympathizer Leni Riefenstahl and all-around KKK bigot D.W. Griffith. Although, I don’t really think Gibson should be compared to these people — yes he had that infamous drunken stupor rant where he blabbed to a cop about Jews controlling the world....

Their victim is Dylan, a smart young woman who’s had the misfortune of being brainwashed with lies by her mother since she was 7. Dylan agreed to speak publicly about the abuse charges in the doc; one gets the sense that she has no idea if what she’s saying is true, she just believes it....
