Just a few months after the release of “Mank,” It has been announced that Fincher is again teaming up with Netflix for a movie. This time it’s “The Killer,” an adaptation of Alexis Nolent’s graphic novel series. ”Seven” screenwriter Andrew Kevin Walker is adapting Nolent’s novels and Michael Fassbender has been confirmed as the lead [via Deadline]. Deadline: “The graphic novel series followed a cold-blooded assassin who begins to have a psychological crisis in a world with no moral compass....

A writer-friend from the French mag “Les Inrockuptibles” wrote to me saying that it was his favourite movie of the year and that “it was going to polarize many”. Adding, “Many people won’t like it, but I found it deceptive in many ways.” An American friend who saw it, and is a huge fan of the first three films, claimed that it was “unwatchable with no stakes,” there were “no great action scenes,” and that it was filled with “dumb humour....

In “The Rental,” two couples go on an oceanside retreat thinking it’ll solve their relationship problems, but start to suspect that the owner of their rental home might be spying on them. Taking place in a single weekend, this film is all about buried secrets and relationships in damn-near crisis mode. IFC Films, and ArcLight Cinemas will open the film in a special engagement at the Vineland Drive-in movie theater on June 18....

When Senate staffer Daniel Jones (Adam Driver) was assigned to lead an investigation into the CIA’s Detention and Interrogation Program he did not know it would become his own personal “heart of darkness”. In a way, Jones’ painstaking analyzing of the extensive evidence at hand, his report turned out to be 6000 pages, revealed just how much our civil liberties were stripped by the Bush administration and, consequentially, the Obama administration, spearheaded by, then CIA director, John Brennan (Ted Levine)....

Having finally seen it, I can confirm it is very silly and not the bonkers brilliant filmmaking of “JCVD,” which had Jean Claude Van Damme, playing himself, stumbling upon a bungled bank heist. What we have instead in ‘Massive Talent’ is a fairly standard action movie. The Cage in ‘Massive Talent’ has a complicated relationship with his daughter, faces bankruptcy, and decides to attend the birthday party of a mafioso superfan (an amusing Pedro Pascal) for the cool sum of a million dollars....

Going back and forth between comedy and drama, “Three Billboards” was an unpredictable ride, mixing both dark comedy and drama, accompanied by the kind of complex characters only McDonagh could invent. Frances McDormand and Sam Rockwell both won Oscars. Alas, his next movie was surely going to grant him new freedoms to tell whatever story he’d like to splatter on-screen. According to Variety, McDonagh has teamed up with Searchlight Pictures and Film4 on a new untitled feature which hopes to be in production later in the year....

“We made this decision after extensive consultation with the National Association of Theater Owners and leading theater chains,” said Solstice president/CEO Mark Gill. “Those conversations have convinced us there is a way to meet pent up demand for the theatrical experience safely.” As seen by this newly-released trailer, “Unhinged” has Crowe hamming it up here as a deranged driver who gets honked at by a poor young mother (Caren Pistorius) only to go all gonzo-ballistic on her for the rest of the film....

With Wes Anderson’s “Asteroid City” and Jonathan Glazer’s “The Zone of Interest” now 2023, not to mention Ari Aster’s “Disappointment Blvd” in limbo, and Paramount keeping Damien Chazelle’s “Babylon” in hiding, Inarritu’s “Bardo” could very well be the movie to beat at Venice/Telluride/Toronto. I still have hopes for Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Poor Things” to be ready by September, but my source is confident that it’s out. The film’s delays don’t make much sense to me, especially since it wrapped production very late last year....

Aster recently screened “Disappointment Blvd” for close friends in New York. A few of them went on social media to start spreading the buzz around this movie. It’s an age-old tactic that’s been done by many prominent filmmakers over the years. It’s meant to further tie the hands of a studio, putting some much-needed pressure on them to release a film. As it stands, there are no plans to release “Disappointment Blvd,” A24 are probably trying to figure out how to distribute this mammoth 210 minute film (especially if it even remains that long)....

The French-language film, an adaptation of Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s “The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant,” will play as part of the international Competition. Ozon has been hit and miss his entire career. One of his better movies, “Grâce à Dieu (By The Grace of God,” was awarded with the Silver Bear Grand Jury Prize back In 2019. Oh and, as we speak, the Berlinale is still very much set to happen in-person (although I’ve been hearing the opposite)....

That could change in the coming days, or week, as rumors are pointing towards Cannes Boss Thierry Fremaux painstakingly trying to get Nicole Kidman to preside over the jury. Fremaux has long admitted being a super fan of Kidman’s, this would be a dream realized for him. Kidman is one of the great actresses of the 21st Century. If she is indeed presiding this year then maybe she should make sure not to bump into ex Tom Cruise, whose “Top Gun: Maverick” will also be playing at the festival....

In a new interview with Fremaux, the Artistic Director of the Cannes Film Festival is now telling Variety that Cannes might show up in the fall, perhaps in a collaboration with the Venice Film Festival. Fantastique. Obviously, no details about this potentially immense partnership were divulged, but this could be just what the doctor ordered to reignite a film industry completely shaken by the COVID-19 pandemic. However, Fremaux again confirmed that, if Cannes does happen this year, it won’t be digital and it won’t be something smaller than it usually is: As for that elusive lineup of competition films which we’ve been trying to decipher these last few months, Fremaux confirms he is still reviewing film submissions with the goal to eventually announce some kind of lineup with the Cannes stamp of approval....

But here’s some very big news I can report: Damon Lindelof’s Star Wars movie, set in the sequel trilogy era, will start production in April. The film will have a new set of leads, but some characters from the last Disney trilogy will be making an appearance. Lindelof is writing the movie alongside Justin Britt-Gibson, while Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy (Ms. Marvel) will be takin over as the director of this one....
