Ryusuke Hamaguchi’s film is a three hour Japanese film that only critics and high-brow hardcore film snobs seem to know exists. It’s a very good film, albeit a trepeditiously slow one; the New York, Boston and Los Angeles film critics groups already named it their Best picture of the year. So what’s the point exactly of the NFSC naming it again the best of the year? This is an honest-to-God serious question on my part....

If the box-office is solid, and that’s debatable, then this could squeeze into next year’s Best Picture race. Butler as Best Actor. The debate is still out there, a 61 on MC and 82% on Rotten Tomatoes isn’t anything to write home about, but it might just be enough (if these numbers sustain). Luhrmann loves to push the senses with his ADD-infused editing techniques, if you’ve seen “Moulin Rouge” then you know what I’m talking about....

The “CODA” streaming service invested more than $120 million on Antoine Fuqua’s slavery drama “Emancapation.” Smith plays a real life slave named Peter from a Louisiana plantation in 1863. The epic, which is already in the can, was set to be another Smith Oscar vehicle for the fall. Now, we’re all wondering what will happen with “Emancipation.” Does it get rejected by the fall festivals, including TIFF and Telluride? How exactly does Smith do publicity for the film?...

“Ford v Ferrari” test-screened on Monday in NYC. Here’s a first-hand account and reaction of the film: “It’s very much a Golden Globes contender, maybe Oscar too. It’s engaging in the moment. A grueling runtime (over 2 and a half hours) moves quickly due to sharp editing and playful chemistry between Damon and Bale. EDITED: “Gemini Man” is all about an older assassin confronting his younger hit-man self — all shot in in 3D HFR (60 or 120 frames per second) by director Ang Lee. Sucking dozens of duped celebrities into the narrative who had befriended and championed LeRoy’s work over the years (Asia Argento, Billy Corgan, Courtney Love, Bono, Michael Pitt, Marilyn Manson, etc.), this captivating swindle has been an endless source of fascination for those absorbed by fabulists and fakers. In a fascinating interview with the Los Angeles Times, “Fargo” and “No Country For Old Men” directors Joel Coen spoke his total disinterest in creating a TV series. He and his brother seem to be cinematic creatures through and through and it seems like it will stay that way until their very final film. The key assertion from the interview stemmed from Joel asserting that movies and TV cannot be compared due to the ambiguous nature of a TV series’ evolution from season-to-season: “The thing about TV series that I don’t understand and I think is hard for both of us to get our minds around is, you know, feature films have a beginning, a middle and an end,” Joel said....

“Joker” earned $2.4 million on Thursday, bringing its 21-day total to $258.6 million. It s set to retake the top spot from ‘Maleficent’ at the week-end box-office. The film had earned $778 million worldwide as of Wednesday, and it has now grossed $788.3 million worldwide. This means it has surpassed “Deadpool” ($782.6 million in 2016) and “Deadpool 2 “($785.05 million in 2018 as the biggest R-rated movie of all time....

“We’re casting, we’re working on the script. There’s a crew out in Oklahoma scouting the locations and getting the production schedule worked out. Because we hope to go to Oklahoma sometime in January and we aim to start shooting on April 5th. Fine, I get all that, this was a major shape shifting moment and part of the reason why cinema fell apart this past decade, but the second, and more intriguing, reason was the #OscarsSoWhite movement. If you remember, in 2014 and 2015, the Academy, and really the industry as a whole, were ridiculed by “Black Twitter” and became the target of hashtag movements such as #OscarsSoWhite. Then the media jumped on the bandwagon and called out the industry for its lack of racial diversity amongst the nominees in major categories....

“Project Power” is directed by Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman, the filmmakers behind the 2010 doc “Catfish.” This narrative feature of theirs, which stars Jamie Foxx and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, deals with a pill that can give you superpowers for five minutes. There are, obviously, deadly side effects that come with it, most notably death. However, Foxx and Gordon-Levitt are here to save the day as they play, respectively, a man out for revenge and his police officer accomplice....

The film became the toast of the town at Venice, Telluride and Toronto. Its Metacritic score was 95 in early September, based on reviews stemming from those three festivals. Many more reviews were eventually added once it was released in November, people woke up to the fact that this was a mediocre film, et voila, it has now totally disappeared from theatres. Not to mention its Metacritic score is now in the mid 70s....

Not too far behind “Stranger Things” in the rankings are: “Orange is the New Black,” “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina the Teenage Witch,” and “Marvel’s Daredevil.” “It’s a special show, and the passion seems to be heightened,” Stadler said. “It seems that particular show has staying power beyond anything.
