The prestigious BFI/Sight and Sound poll, which has run once a decade for the past 70 years, will have close to 1600 voters this year. We already mentioned that the results will be available in Sight and Sound’s December issue, available in newsstands the 5th day of that month. We have now learned that the results will first be revealed on BFI’s website the afternoon of December 1st and the results and commentary of both the critics’ and directors’ polls will be published in full in a special 164-page Winter double issue of Sight and Sound, with subscribers receiving a copy on 2nd December....

Sacha Baron Cohen stars as Borat Sagdiyev, the fictitious Kazakh journalist who goes back to the United States to make a documentary, based on real-life, docu-interactions with everyday Americans. The film is directed by Jason Woliner (“Parks and Recreation”) who replaces the original film’s, Larry Charles. Cohen made a name for himself in 2006. I was already a fan of the brilliant satire in his HBO series “Da Ali G Show,” but it was a real kick to see him bring Borat to the big screen during the Bush-era....

Bringing Dean back from the dead, more than 60 years after he passed away, is already a creepy proposition on-paper. As is the tradition for many upcoming Nolan movies, a teaser tends to be snuck into one of the bigger summer blockbusters a year prior to release. So the murmurs that I heard in June turned out to be true. “Oppenheimer” is said to have a budget of around $100 million. It’ll also be interesting to see just how much of “Oppenheimer” will be shot in IMAX analog black and white by Nolan and DP Hoyte Van Hoytema....

Lynch was promoting the digital restoration of “Inland Empire” when he got bombarded with Cannes-related questions. It was actually amusing watching Lynch go through denial after denial this afternoon. The strangest answer he gave was when he told Entertainment Weekly that the “rumor” was unfounded. “It is not happening,” he explained. “I don’t have a project. I have nothing at Cannes. O. Russell’s last film was the 2015 movie, “Joy”. Although considered a major disappointment, as it failed to receive the acclaim of his last three movies (“The Fighter”, “Silver Linings Playbook”, “American Hustle”), all of which were Best Picture nominated, it still managed to be a well-made affair and continued to prove that O.Russell was an elite filmmaker. “Canterbury Glass,” test-screened in early January and we can confirm the cast includes Christian Bale, Margot Robbie, John David Washington, Robert De Niro, Anya Taylor-Joy, Rami Malek, Michael Shannon, Zoe Saldana, Chris Rock, Mike Myers and Taylor Swift....

Aren’t we lucky to have two Ryusuke Hamaguchi films in the same year? The Japanese director has really come into his own this year. I’ll have thoughts on “Drive My Car” later this week. His first films, the critically-acclaimed 5-hour “Happy Hour” (didn’t see it) and the underrated “Asako 1 & 2” set the stage for the banner year that he’s had. Also watch his “other” 2021 film, the entertaining triptych “Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy....

David Lynch premiered the first two episodes of “Twin Peaks: The Return.” Director’s Fortnight had Sean Baker’s “The Florida Project” and Chloe Zhao’s “The Rider,” both deserved to be in competition that year. Ditto Agnes Varda’s “Faces/Places,” However, let’s focus on the competition. Here are the 19 films that were vying for the Palme d’Or. “I would have been with Pedro on this one, Campillo’s BPM easily! What a pity Will Smith vehemently ‘blocked’ this one because he was utterly shocked by the representation of masculine fluids on screen!...

As mentioned, and according to Deadline, Guadagnino is helming this “Scarface” remake for Universal, which had its draft recently rewritten by Joel and Ethan Coen. This will be the third “Scarface” movie, after the 1932 Chicago-set version and Brian De Palma’s 1980 film set in Miami, Guadagnino’s “Scarface” is expected to take place in Los Angeles. Guadagnino is best known as the director of the 2017 critical favorite “Call Me By Your Name....
