This is a good opportunity to show appreciation for the legend. Cage has no doubt had a rather strange acting career, especially the last decade or so where his film choices have gotten weirder and weirder. It’s come to the point, sadly, where many movie fans just don’t take him all that seriously anymore. Which is a shame, because this is the same Oscar-winning actor that, at some point in the late 80s to early 00s, gave us brave and exciting performances in films as diverse as “Adaptation”, “Leaving Las Vegas”, “Raising Arizona,” “Wild At Heart” and “Red Rock West,” just to name a few....

He’s most well known for his role as the headmaster in “Dead Poets Society”. He was already in his mid-70s then. However, in my movie-crazed world, Lloyd will always be most associated for his role as the titular agitator in Alfred Hitchcock‘s “Saboteur.’ But, really, Lloyd has been acting since the `30s. He starred in two Orson Welles-directed stage plays (“Julius Caesar” and “Shoemaker’s Holiday”) also worked with Elia Kazan, Jean Renoir (“The Southerner”), Charlie Chaplin (“Limelight”), and Martin Scorsese (“The Age of Innocence”)....

THR’s Scott Feinberg has Cruise as his #4 and none other than Adam Sandler as his #5. Yes, here I am again talking about Sandler. I just can’t seem to escape him these last few weeks. On 09.29.22 I mentioned how Netflix was going to relentlessly push his “Hustle” performance during awards season. I’m not ready to insert him into my predictions just yet, but let’s all stop believing that he doesn’t have a slight shot at getting into the final five....

The Irishman (Netflix) The on-paper favorite in many industry experts’ eyes is one that will no doubt operate as catnip for many voters. Not only a Scorsese picture, but one boasting three unchallengeable screen legends, with four acting Oscars between them in Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, and Joe Pesci. When nominations are announced it would be a huge surprise not to see Scorsese’s latest effort sat atop the list with around 11 nominations, including its legendary trio and their director....

Best Picture The top prize, as we speak, on 02/15/21, is predicted to go to Jane Campion’s “The Power of the Dog.” However, as much as I loved the film, something tells me that it hasn’t struck the same chord with voters as it has with critics. A good indicator is its audience scores. A 6.9 on IMDB, 7.0 on a Metacritic and 3.7 on Letterboxd isn’t anything to shout home about....

You tell me. A recent cryptically-written Facebook post by Schrader has the writer-director basically insinuating that Jane Campion’s “The Power of the Dog” is an Oscar contender because of its politics and money-driven campaigning rather than quality: Schrader wrote: “WAGGING THE POWER OF THE DOG: Entertainment liberals have always been eager to bemoan the power of money and spin to control political discourse but this years awards season makes clear this is business as usual in Hollywood as well....

French actress-turned-director Maiwenn asked De Niro that question during a recent masterclass at the Marrakech Film Festival (via Variety), the actor replied with a simple “I don’t know,” only adding, “I don’t have a problem working with a woman. If it’s a good script I’d do it.” De Niro has worked with three female filmmakers in his career: Penny Marshall(“Awakenings”), Agnes Varda (“One Hundred and One Nights”), and Nancy Meyers (“The Intern”)....

The gist of the “Moonfall” plot reads almost like every cliche of every Roland Emmerich movie. There’s a reason he’s known as the “master of disaster.” A mysterious force knocks the Moon from its orbit around Earth and sends it hurtling on a collision course with our own planet. Our characters have just two weeks to save the world. Halle Berry is a former astronaut who devises a plan to rescue the planet, but only Patrick Wilson’s Brian and a conspiracy theorist (John Bradley) believe her....

Howard’s film had received the best test scores in MGM history — earning a 97 in the top two boxes and an 86 “definite recommend”. It was originally set for release on April 15th but then got rescheduled for a prime November 18th date. “Thirteen Lives” has a great cast, Colin Farrell, Viggo Mortensen, and Joel Edgerton, and is based on the true story of a rescue mission in Thailand, where a group of young boys and their soccer coach were trapped in a flooding maze-like underground cave....

The season premiere of the new series got down to business rather quickly by killing her character off a few seconds into the proceedings. During an appearance on A24’s “A Bigger Canvas” podcast, Scorsese told “The Souvenir” director Joanna Hogg that the VFX required to de-age the actors has not gone as fluidly as planned. It also sounds like he is adamant at taking a perfectionist approach to the film’s de-aging process and wants the de-aged faces to look as realistic as possible. During this same conversation, he also adds that the process has left him nervous about the finished product....

The film was written by “Moonlight” Oscar winner Tarell Alvin McCraney and stars André Holland as an NBA agent who tries to get his young client to sign a controversial business opportunity during a players strike and league shutdown. Zazie Beetz, Melvin Gregg, Sonja Sohn, Zachary Quinto, Kyle MacLachlan, and Bill Duke. The film had originally been rumored to appear at Sundance, but it looks like Slamdance won a rare battle for a premiere....

In the book he tells Cameron that he “never could figure out how to end that darn thing,” referring to the abrupt finale. He outright said, “The film doesn’t have a good ending.” I loved 2/3 of Steven Spielberg’s “War of the Worlds.” The film lost me when Tim Robbins’ character showed up and then, as Spielberg mentions in the above passage, that terrible ending happened. The film starts to lose its momentum at around the 80-minute mark....

Scrolling through this year’s slate of big studio summer fare, I came up with a dozen titles that could turn out to be very good movies. I’m not including indies, most already seen by yours truly at festivals. Some of the smaller-scaled delights you shouldn’t miss this summer include Petite Maman, Vortex, Happening, Pleasure, Watcher, Fire, and Cha Cha Real Smooth. You also won’t find a few potential blockbuster titles such as “Jurassic: World Dominion”, and “Firestarter” because, well, they just don’t look very promising....

If you remember, after numerous sexually assault allegations surfaced against him, troubled actor Armie Hammer got “Plummer-ed” and had his already-shot scenes replaced by Will Arnett. Waititi held the reshoots late last year.The situation is very similar to what was done to Kevin Spacey on “All the Money in the Worlds,” the former had his scenes completely reshot with the late great Christopher Plummer as his replacement. Principal photography on “Next Goal Wins” began in November of 2019 and wrapped in January 2020, it has been in a state of limbo ever since....

According to Tarantino, Leonardo Dicaprio’s Dalton is “a man full of inner turmoil and self-pity for not being in a better position, career-wise. But as is Rick’s way, he blames everybody but himself.” Tarantino describes Brad Pitt’s Booth as an “indestructible World War II hero” and one of the “deadliest guys alive” who “could kill you with a spoon, a piece of paper, or a business card. Consequently, he is a rather Zen dude who is troubled by very little....

”It all ends with a stunning final shot, as Scorsese brings it all full circle, with Sheeran as lonely as ever, nearing death and filled with regret for the decisions he’s made in life. It feels like some kind of final hurrah for the 76-year-old director and his star actor, an adieu to the passage of time that feels like the finiteness of something major. It’s no coincidence then that Scorsese decided to include in the film a brief shot with the background of a cinema playing John Wayne’s own final hurrah, “The Shootist” — a film in which Wayne portrayed a dying and disabled cowboy nearing the end of his life and haunted by the violence he committed on people....
