“White Noise” has been deemed “impossible to film” ever since it was published back in 1985. It is a plotless postmodernist exploration of death, consumerism, and suburban malaise. Dealing with Jack and Babette Gladney, a college professor of “Hitler studies” and his mostly-loving wife, DeLillo’s novel deals with this couple’s social anxieties, but, more specifically, their unabashed fear of death. Baumbach is the New York-born director of indie classics such as “The Squid and the Whale, ” and “Frances Ha.” This would be his fourth film with partner and muse Gerwig, after “Frances Ha,” “Greenberg,” and “Mistress America.” Meanwhile, Driver starred and was Oscar-nominated for his work in Baumbach’s 2019 film “Marriage Story.” This latest Netflix title can be added to the streaming giant’s stacked 2021 lineup which includes films by stalwart directors such as Richard Linklater, Zack Snyder, Andrew Dominik, Adam McKay, Guillermo del Toro, Jane Campion, and Henry Selick.
