Software specialist Synamedia says they have new technology that can track down users sharing accounts and passwords for Netflix. The technology, it says, “combats the rapid rise in account sharing between friends and families, turning it instead into a new revenue-generating opportunity for operators.”
Media research firm Magid claims that 26 percent of millennials share passwords for video streaming services.
Rumors have been pointing towards the streaming service potentially cracking down on those sharing their account widely. However, those same rumors point towards Netflix possibly just nudging you to upgrade to a premium account, which would be able to be shared with family and friends. However, if it finds that it is being shared wider and that passwords are being sold through for-profit operations, then accounts could potentially be shut down (via The Verge).
