There are a lot of titles from Cannes and Venice here. Also, notice how “TÁR,” this year’s critical darling, doesn’t fare as well with the highbrows. “Everything Everywhere All At Once,” and “Top Gun: Maverick” are completely absent from the top 20 — which further legitimizes this list. Note, two Hong Sangsoo’s in the top 10. The Korean filmmaker has been releasing, sometimes, multiple films per year, for almost ten years, now and they all manage to find critical support. It’s quite impressive. Of course, since this is Film Comment, no year-end list would be complete without a Claire Denis movie, even one of her worst-reviewed ones (Stars at Noon) which managed to make it at #17.
