As for the new releases, “Crawl” opened with a $12 million domestic intake, which means, if you also count the $5M the film made overseas, it has made back its entire $13.5 million budget. The Kumail Nanjiani-Dave Bautista buddy-cop comedy “Stuber” was not as successful, having earned only $8 million the past three days. Also, it does not look like “Midsommar” will be any kind of breakout hit for A24, as, despite good reviews, the Ari Aster-directed horror movie added only $3.5 million in its third week ($18M domestic intake). With all that being said, the film has more than surpassed its reported $9M budget and sets up, quite nicely, a potential new era of art-house horror indie cheapies. A24’s major breakthrough, however, was for Lulu Wang’s “The Farewell,” starring Awkwafina, which had the best per theater average of any 2019 film released so far opening with $351,330, but a $87,000 per theater average. Brace yourselves, “The Lion King” is coming next week. Contribute Hire me
