In this hip-hop flick, director Curtis Hanson brought out the intensity of Eminem so well that we think you’d be hard-pressed to find anyone who could ignore it. This biopic about an inner city guy’s struggles in the hood was as raw and powerful as the Oscar-winning Eminem song for the film called “Lose Yourself.” To top things off, the thrilling rap battle that ends “8 Mile” sealed the deal about Slim Shady’s dramatic abilities: the rapper really can act and then some....

If you remember, the film was aiming to premiere at Cannes, but the Netflix issue at the heart of that festival hasn’t been solved. A real shame since Campion remains the only female director to ever win the Palme d’Or with 1993’s “The Piano.” The synopsis for “The Power of the Dog” is said to follow “two brothers in 1920s Montana as they come to blows over the fact that one of them marries a woman secretly....

Anderson has been shooting “Asteroid City” in Spain since August. Plot details have been kept very hush-hush, but we do know that the film is said to take place in Arizona and not Spain. According to Spanish newspaper El Pais, Anderson has been filming " “Asteroid City” in and around Madrid. The article confirms that sets were built to create a desert-like location typically seen in westerns, although the outlet confirms the film will not be a western....

Now that the dust has settled, and we’ve more less explained why “Saint Omer” wasn’t part of Cannes, some are wondering if Cannes needs to do a little re-evaluating in their selection process. I say that’s bollocks. It’s generally been a weak year for movies in general, and we even saw that at Venice this year which, yet again, was hailed as a worthy edition even though many titles underwhelmed over there....

Europe seems to have had no problem with the film, as it opened this summer in Poland (7.26) Lithuania (8.2), Greece (8.22), the Netherlands (8.29), Turkey (8.30), France (9.18), Czech Republic (9.26), Italy (10.3), Spain (10.4) and Mexico (10.25). However, the wokest countries in the world (U.S, Germany and the U.K.) decided to abstain and boycott Allen’s latest. You see, Woody is still toxic to the Robespierre-like tyrannicals in this country....

It’s kind of surprising that of all the big titles being launched this fall, only one will be doing the four major festivals (NYFF, TIFF, Venice and Telluride). Not only is Laura Poitras’ “All the Beauty and the Bloodshed” the Centerpiece selection for the 60th New York Film Festival, but it’s also that rare documentary to actually crack the Venice competition. TIFF has also announced the film as part of their lineup, but what about Telluride?...

The film, a direct sequel to Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 adaptation of Stephen King’s “The Shining,” follows Ewan McGregor as an older Danny Torrence, as he ventures back through his past and inner demons in order to protect a young girl (Kyliegh Curran) from a cult who prey on those with similar abilities to him. This new trailer marks the first since we learned the film will carry an R-rating upon its Halloween release, and Warner Bros have certainly opted to showcase more of the film’s horror elements, giving audiences a taste of what they can expect....

The production was made for just $2 million dollars. A lot of this success seems to stem from Plaza coming off the enormous popularity of “The White Lotus,” but it sure helps that “Emily the Criminal” is actually a good movie. I Capsule reviewed the film back in January and again in July, correlating with its small summer release. It didn’t do much business at the box-office, but has managed to find a large audience on Netflix....

This is a fact-based drama about Saeed Hanaei (Mehdi Bajestani), a God-fearing man who went on a killing spree of 17 prostitutes back in 2001. I wasn’t that taken by the film’s first hour, which uses familiar genre tropes to set up its stronger last 40 minutes . You mostly get to see Saeed graphically strangling his female victims. Meanwhile, a go-getting female reporter (Zar Amir-Ebrahimi) becomes obsessed with the case, so much so that she decides to go undercover as a prostitute to try to get picked up by this creep....

Today, Netflix released the trailer for Kaufman’s “I’m Thinking of Ending Things,” which will be released on September 4th. Written and directed by Kaufman, “I’m Thinking of Ending Things” is based on Ian Reid’s novel of the same name, and is being described as a psychological thriller about a young couple in an isolated farmhouse. “I was looking for something that somebody would let me direct and it’s easier to get something made if it’s based on a book, or a comic book, or a movie that’s already existed,” Kaufman told the Wall Street Journal....

This latest spooker is a hybrid of science-fiction and horror shot during the UK’s 2020 lockdown. The parallels are inevitable, the story is set in a world where masks are worn and quarantine is mandatory: a deadly virus has reshaped the world. Dr Martin Lowery (Joel Fry) is a researcher specializing in crop efficiency, he’s desperate to find Dr Olivia Wendle (Hayley Squires), who has gone missing as she was conducting experiments deep in the forest....

The film was first announced back in 2016, but since then has encountered a number of problems, going through multiple writers, a director change, the pandemic and Ford hurting his shoulder during production. It’s unknown how much longer it has to go before production wraps and plot details have been kept at a minimum, although I did reveal last week that the film will incorporate time travel.
