The legendary filmmaker hasn’t been shy in revealing his issues when it comes to securing funding for his next film. Then, in November, he doubled down saying that Netflix rejected his new project. Now, in an interview with Variety, he says things haven’t really changed since last fall; “It’s always been a bit of a struggle, but there’s a lot more reluctance and resistance for backers to take that on board now,” he says....

This is very much good news, we’re going to get to see Baumbach’s sprawling, ambitious opus, an adaptation of Don Delilo’s polarizing novel that is said to be so vast that it easily counts as the writer-director’s biggest movie yet. The entire Venice lineup will be revealed on Tuesday, some names that will certainly be a part of this 91st edition include Baumbach, Inarritu, Aronofsky, Schrader, Panahi, Guadagnino, McDonagh, Dominik, Field, Hong, and Wiseman....

It’s also, all of a sudden, climbed up the Gold Derby Best Picture rankings to #16. I doubt it gets nominated, but that is still very impressive. Nobody expected this one to figure even in the top 30. Wells’ film has also now topped Sight and Sound’s year-end critics poll, beating out competition titles from Cannes, Venice, and Berlin. Finishing at #2 is another film by a female director, Alice Diop’s “Saint Omer” — which I was told came very close to making it into Cannes competition, but, while waiting for a final answer from the festival, ultimately decided to take Venice’s offer....

Obviously, comparing ‘Fabelmans’ to “Glass Onion,” which also opened in 600 theaters, is probably unfair, but Rian Johnson’s sequel made around $14-15 million this weekend. The Telluride and Venice festivals, unlike Toronto, will not be doing streaming, and that’s obviously something that turns most big title owners off. Right now, Canadian government is being extremely cautious about the new Delta strain of COVID-19, which, who knows, could be an issue for other festivals this fall as well....
