Clocking in at 111-minutes, this finely crafted doc ends abruptly, but that’s about the only major qualm I have with it. Marshall’s treatise is a deep-dish exploration of Andy, Maurice, and Robin Gibb’s life and career, their whitewater journey through the mountainous alleys of ’60s and ’70s pop. Of course, soon after creating the “Saturday Night Fever” soundtrack and becoming icons of the disco genre, The Bee Gees were castigated out of the business in the wake of an anti-disco backlash, which started in and around ’79 and ’80....

What a great start to a disappointing film. It turns out that Huda has been reluctantly working for an Israeli spy agency — she lures targets to her salon, drugs them, and photographs them in compromising positions. It’s blackmail, and Huda hates herself for doing it, caught in a conflict between two sides that hate each other. It’s this internal struggle that drives the film forward, especially after Huda is exposed as a traitor and kidnapped by the Palestinians looking for all the dirt she has....

Based on the book Caging Skies by Christine Leunens and taking place during World War II, the film’s titular character is a lonely German boy (Roman Griffin Davis) whose imaginary friend is Hitler (played by Waititi) and whose mother (Scarlett Johansson) is hiding a young girl (Thomasin McKenzie) in their attic. Waititi (“Thor: Ragnarok”) has described this film as an “anti-hate satire.” The film also stars Rebel Wilson, Stephen Merchant, Alfie Allen, and Sam Rockwell....

For such a freewheeling film, the 133 minute runtime is still very much needed to bring some much needed depth to what would have otherwise been a slight affair. PTA doesn’t do slight. His film is a love story, but one filled with masterful brush strokes. It’s like a madcap mix of Linklater, “Punch-Drunk Love” and Leo’s Carax’s “Holy Motors.” Alana Haim is absolutely lovely. Ditto Cooper Hoffman who plays her “romantic” partner....

These two appearances have been the only public appearances C.K. has made since last November. “A few women walked out,” a source told the NY Post’s Page Six. “He didn’t address [the #MeToo allegations against him]. He was a little arrogant…he made some comment like, ‘I’ve been off for a while, ‘cause everyone needs a break.’ A source claims two people walked out of the Comedy Cellar when C.K made his appearance....

No stranger to ambition, Linklater famously filmed his masterful “Boyhood” over 12 years. However, even that was not enough to land him a Best Director or Best Picture Oscar win. So, how could he possibly outdo one of the rare films in history that sits with a perfect 100 score on Metacritic. Well, how about shoot a film over a span of 20 years. At a recent SXSW panel, Linklater confirmed that his adaptation of Steven Sondheim’s “Merrily We Roll Along” has already been shooting now for close to two years....

However, I know a talent when I see one, and Robert Eggers is just that. You can tell that he’s the real deal by the way he framed “The Witch” and built up that dreaded atmosphere. Another filmmaker in that same league would be “Hereditary” master Ari Aster. A teaser trailer for his second feature has just been released and it looks delectably insane. Aster has assembled a strong cast, especially the amazing Florence Pugh (“ Lady Macbeth”)....

Suffice to say, the way the story is told is ambitious enough to make it sound very much like a Christopher Nolan movie. This person compared the narrative structure to “Dunkirk.” The film is separated between two timelines. Not always linear or made obviously clear. The black and white scenes take place after the detonation of the bomb. It tackles Oppenheimer’s public tribunal, if you will, the public humiliation and the after-effects of what he created....

Guillermo del Toro’s “Pinocchio” will have its very first showing at BFI. The film will likely be ready in the coming weeks, but Del Toro is confident enough about its completion that a first week in October bow is set in London. The stop-motion film was directed by del Toro from a screenplay by the Mexican filmmaker and Patrick McHale. The film’s voice cast is staggering and includes Ewan McGregor, Cate Blanchett, John Turturro, Ron Perlman, Tim Blake Nelson, Christoph Waltz and Tilda Swinton....

If you remember, Kechiche’s Palme d’Or winning “Blue is the Warmest Color” was met with controversy back in 2013 when its stars, Léa Seydoux and Adèle Exarchopoulos, accused the director of taking advantage of them on-set, both describing the experience as “horrible,” and vowing to never work with him again. The whole controversy stems from the actresses admitting that they felt “forced” to perform the, now infamous, 13 minute graphic sex-scene....

Speaking to /Film, Lawrence talks about his last film, the cold war spy drama, “Red Sparrow,” because those kinds of movies just don’t get made anymore. His reasoning behind this depressing statement has, not surprisingly, something to do with Netflix and its streaming competitors. “It was already a different world from the moment we decided to make ‘Red Sparrow’ to when ‘Red Sparrow’ came out,” he explained. “I mean, for many reasons....

Supposedly, there were no empty seats at Saturday’s first Academy screening of the film, with sources saying that the musical biopic and its star Taron Egerton, who was in attendance for a post-screening Q&A, earned a standing ovation. This bodes well for Egerton and the film itself, especially since this year has yet to give us much Oscar-bait. I believe A24’s Sundance hit “The Farewell” could strike a major chord with Oscar voters, also, if the academy is in an adventurous mood then maybe, just maybe, genre fare like Jordan Peele’s “Us” and Marvel’s “Avengers: Endgame” could sneak into the Best Picture race....

People are underestimating the potential of Tim Miller’s upcoming Terminator movie, a sort of back-to-the-basics approach by producer James Cameron and Miller to bring the franchise back to its glory days (the first two films). Arnold Schwarzenegger and Linda Hamilton are back. What more do you need? Also, don’t, for a second, think Cameron is the mastermind behind the whole film; Yes, Miller is credited as director but you very much need to see this film as a directorial duet....

At 167 minutes without credits, “The Batman” is set to be one of the longest comic book movies ever released in theatres. Only “Avengers: Endgame” (181 minutes) ran longer and that’s with the addition of closing credits. Once all is said and done, “The Batman” will probably have an official runtime of 175-180 with closing credits. That is one hell of an ambitious superhero movie. The tropes are all here: a sadistic sergeant (a fantastic Bokeem Woodbine), the sympathetic superior (Raúl Castillo), the supportive and non-supportive recruits. However, this actually happened, Pope basically plays Bratton, delving deep into the experiences his filmmaker went through as a gay marine recruit. The results are pleasantly subtle, but a bit too conventional to fully standout in a genre that’s produced far too many of these types of film....
