The New York Film Festival has selected Elegance Bratton‘s “The Inspection” as the closing night film of its upcoming 60th edition. Bratton’s film will have its world premiere at TIFF. However, many expected one of the bigger fall titles to take this slot, alas, it wasn’t meant to be. Bratton is primarily known for non-fiction, especially the documentary “Pier Kids”, and the Viceland series “My House.” This is his first narrative feature, and is based on Bratton’s own experiences as a gay man in Marine Corps basic training after a decade living on the streets....

“The disorientation and uncertainty of this tough year had the effect of returning us to core principles,” said Dennis Lim, Director of Programming for NYFF. “To put it simply, the Main Slate is our collective response to one central question: which films matter to us right now? Movies are neither made nor experienced in a vacuum, and while the works in our program predate the current moment of crisis, it’s striking to me just how many of them resonate with our unsettled present, or represent a means of transcending it....

Yes, “Roma” just won the top prize at the BAFTA’s, which holds a decent amount of Oscar voters in its voting body, but don’t be fooled by the win. “Green Book” was not eligible as it wasn’t a British production. As you can tell, I am with “Green Book” until the bitter end. Ever since I saw it at TIFF and soaked up the response from the enamored audience I saw it with, I told myself there just isn’t a better contender this year....

Henry Selick’s “Wendell & Wild” could maybe build up an overdue narrative for the maestro — its positive reviews are a plus, albeit they are not entirely glowing and even ardent Selick fans will tell you this is far from being his best work. Meanwhile, the lukewarm reception for “Lightyear” does have me wondering if it’ll even get in (probably not). Maybe the “same-sex kiss” controversy in many countries could have it benefitting from a political angle, but there have been far worthier animated films released....

“Spencer” sucks you right into Princess Diana’s head. It’s a chamber piece and one that will probably anger a lot of fans of “The Crown,” who will expect some kind of mainstream entertainment. Larrain’s movie isn’t in the least bit “mainstream.” It’s a Pablo Larrain movie, and if you’ve seen “Jackie” then think of this as its spiritual successor, but in a very limited setting and with a lot more dialogue....

It took 14 years for this sequel to finally be released, and it picks up right where the original left off. The Parr family – mom Helen (voiced by Holly Hunter), dad Bob (Craig T. Nelson), 14-year-old Violet (Sarah Vowell), 10-year-old Dash (Huckleberry Milner) and scene-stealing baby Jack-Jack (Eli Fucile) – have to hold their heroics in check due to the state banishing crime-fighting. It doesn’t take long for the world to need this family of Incredibles again as a villain named the Underminer (John Ratzenberger) becomes a major threat....

EXCLUSIVE: Robert Eggers, who is coming off this past April’s critically-acclaimed “The Northman,” will be shooting his fourth film very late this year. That’s right, Eggers’ passion project, “Nosferatu” has finally gotten the green light. Earlier this year, Eggers managed to register “Nosferatu” with the Czech Film Fund. That was already a great sign that the film was moving forward. A production in Prague and Toronto is now set for the film....

Turkish-German filmmaker Fatih Akin had a streak of critically-acclaimed films in the 2000s (Head-On, The Edge of Heaven, Soul Kitchen). He’s won prizes at Cannes, Berlin and even a Golden Globe. In 2019, he released the critically reviled Berlin-entry “The Golden Glove,” and now his new film “Rheingold,” which was predicted this year for Cannes, Venice and then Toronto, is finally going to world premiere at Filmfest Hamburg. Obviously, a demotion for this once world-class filmmaker....

The ‘Cha Cha Cha’ deal surpasses “Good Luck, Leo Grande,”which had been, up to this point, the biggest purchase of this year’s fest, having been bought by Searchlight Pictures for $7.5 million. If you remember, Apple also conducted the biggest deal of Sundance 2021 with the $25 million spent out for, now, Oscar contender “CODA.” I don’t see any film surpassing that total this year, let alone what was dished out for ‘Cha Cha Cha....

Next year’s festival program will be both online and in-person. The past two editions of the fully virtual Sundance Film Festival were fantastic experiences, and saw a coming together of movie fans online that felt wholly unique. Sundance had its first ever Best Picture winner in March when “CODA” won the big prize. They’ve seen the positive effects that an online festival can bring, especially when it comes to record-breaking ticket sales....

Speaking at a recent event at the Filmoteca de Catalunya in Spain, Gilliam reiterated his feeling of boredom towards the genre: “I agree with you, they’re boring. I mean, they’re repetitive,” said Gilliam. “They’re technically brilliant. The work is amazing. There’s some very good actors working. There’s some wonderful moments. But to me, it’s the same film. I keep watching the same film.” He added, “It bothers me that people are so desperate to believe in superheroes rather than real people doing extraordinary things....

According to Variety, EVO Entertainment in Texas will be reopening two locations on Monday, and to attend a screening, people will have to go through “airport security-style check-in,” CEO Mitchell Roberts said in a statement. “I feel like it’s really important for our guests to come in and see what we’re doing to protect them,” Roberts told Variety. “The focus is on earning that customer confidence back.” Since there are no new blockbusters out there right now to screen, the chain is set to screen Universal’s “Trolls World Tour” and “The Hunt,” both of which are available on VOD right now for $20....

According to the report, Academy leadership have been “scrambling” to find a replacement for Kevin Hart and have mulled the option of just not having a host at all this year. Variety’s Matt Donnelly reports, citing sources with first-hand knowledge of Academy board meetings, that the academy was “blindsided” by Hart’s resignation. One unnamed comedy agent told Variety that the award show’s producers were not prepared, with a backup plan, for Hart’s ouster, saying “They’re freaking out” at the Academy....

First and foremost, Bailey tackles the hottest ticket at TIFF this year which is “Jojo Rabbit,” Taika Waititi’s anti-fascist satire: ”Taika Waititi’s “Jojo Rabbit” is one that really jumped out at us. He’s a brilliant filmmaker and he’s back in the Marvel Cinematic Universe with a new Thor film, but he’s an independent thinker as a filmmaker. We’ve seen him do different films over the years, and this is a bold, daring satire....

Whatever happened to him since 2006 is a mystery to us all. Both films garnered eight Oscar nominations in total, the former actor was heralded as a major new voice and then, poof, he was gone. That is until this year when he started production on “Tár,” his first film in over 16 years. Cate Blanchett stars in a drama that Field wrote and directed. Now The Playlist’s usually-reliable Gregory Elwood is saying that the buzz for the film “is reaching operatic levels....

Field’s film, one of the very best released this year, can be seen at the comfort of your own home on 11.15.22. Despite the rave reviews, “TÁR” hasn’t been lighting up the box-office by any stretch of the imagination. It has currently made a little over $4 million. Field hadn’t directed a film since “Little Children” (2006) and, before that, his incendiary debut “In the Bedroom” (2001). That is until “TÁR,” his first statement in over 16 years....

The sequel, ‘Wakanda Forecer,’ for obvious reasons, will not have Michael B. Jordan and the late Chadwick Boseman. In fact, the creators have decided to just kill off Boseman’s T’Challah AkA Black Panther. It all leaves you to wonder why they didn’t just recast T’Challah with another actor. Just because the actor died in real life, it doesn’t mean you can’t replace him.
