Malek was trying to honor young people struggling with their identity when he said “listen, we made a film about a gay man, an immigrant, who lived his life unapologetically himself,” but chinese censors replaced “gay man” with “special group.” Screen grabs of the moment went viral on Chinese social media. China is known to ban or censor gay-themed content in apprehensive ways. Last year, for example, they banned gay romance “Call Me by Your Name” from appearing at the Beijing International Film Festival....

Here’s the synopsis: “I was a fan of Possessor, hell I liked Antiviral too. Big fan of horror/exploitation/weirdo in general stuff and was rooting for this as the premise and cast seemed on point. We had originally reported that the film had an estimated budget of around $100-$110 million. You can’t imagine the amount of emails I’ve gotten since then — people pointing to a Variety piece stating it’s actually $80 million. Regardless, IndieWire’s Anne Thompson has put all of that to rest now, she writes the budget is said to be a little more than $100 million. On a side note: I am very tempted to include “Babylon” on my ten best list, despite the flaws, it has some of the most hypnotic moments of any movie this year....

Stars Ansel Elgort and Rachel Zegler pose for a few attractive snaps isn’t mind-blowing stuff, but it showcases a bit of what’s to be expected with this movie....

What we do know is that Sundance 2021 will go from being a 10-day festival to just seven days, taking place from January 28 to February 3. Betsy Wallace, the Sundance Institute’s managing director, and CFO, appeared before the Park City city council Tuesday to get these plans signed off, which include a drastically reduced amount of space for parking, ticketing, and office space Sundance is planning on leasing from the city....

“Mad Max: Fury Road” has singlehandedly redefined what an action movie can do. George Miller worked on his baby for the better part of 30 years and his vision was finally unleashed on screens nationwide a few weekends ago to the ravest of rave reviews. Where does this “Mad Max” stack up with the others? I’m pretty sure it’s on par with, if not better than, 1982’s “The Road Warrior”, a film that changed the action movie game over 30 years ago....

Here’s another IndieWire list published this weekend. They’ve decided to rank the 75 Best Comedies of the 21st Century. The goal of this particular list is to no doubt stir up some debate, but I have added my take on it below, movies that had me laughing to no ends. What the world needs most right now is to laugh, but everything, including the movies, feel so self-serious. Don’t get me wrong, my church will always be serious hard-nosed cinema, but there’s something great and freeing about actually … laughing your ass off....

You kept checking the time, waiting for this poor miserable dog of a show to end. There was barely any entertainment to it, let alone actual investment. Maybe it’s because Hollywood movies just aren’t as culturally relevant as they used to be. One can remember a time when Best Picture winners such as “Gladiator,” “Titanic,” “The Silence of the Lambs,” “Forrest Gump,” and “The Lord of the Rings” we’re actually seen by millions of Americans....

“Avatar: The Way of Water” nabbbed an estimated 3-day opening of $135M. That’s the 6th best domestic December debut. According to Deadline’s sources, the film cost around $460M before P&A. There’s no direct competition for quite some time. So, ‘The Way of Water’ will have legs at the box-office, much like the first movie. The question is how much of a drop will it have next weekend? The masses will surely flock to see it on Christmas Day....

Pixar’s last release, this summer’s “Toy Story 4,” came off the heels of some rather disappointing sequels from the toon company. With the exception of “Toy Story 2” and “Toy Story 3,” Pixar has had a rather lackluster set of sequels delivered to us since its inception back in 1995. Sure, there were things to love about “Finding Dory,” “Toy Story 4,” and “Monster University,” maybe less so when it came to “Cars 2,” “Cars 3,” but they all lacked the overall focus and thematic resonance of the originals....

The 82-year-old Spanish filmmaker is now set to return with his first feature in over thirty years. Spanish media El Diario is reporting that Erice is preparing to shoot a new film titled “Cerrar los ojos” (To Close One’s Eyes). Not much is known about the project, but that it has cast actors José Coronado and María León in roles. Many filmmakers, including Guillermo del Toro, Pedro Almodóvar, and Miguel Gomes, have cited Erice as a major influence on their own works....

How can anyone, that isn’t brainwashed by the Disney propaganda machine, not see that ‘Panther’ is a by-the-books Marvel movie. There are people out there calling it a “masterpiece,” that is insanity. Yes, it has an all African-American cast and for that it should be considered a cultural groundbreaker, but an artistic groundbreaker? Not even close. Truth of the matter is that movies stemming from the MCU can be qualified as OK....
